Matt and I invite you to learn why we think you will fall in love with our home just like we did almost twenty years ago. From the first moment we stepped through the old Dutch front door, we knew we had found our home in Bar Harbor, ME (and our business!). We had been searching for a bed and breakfast on Mount Desert Island for almost two years. We were a relatively young couple with two small daughters so we wanted more than just an innkeeper’s room in a windowless basement. We wanted a home and a small town in which to raise our family. We fell in love with Bar Harbor and Acadia and we can’t wait to share them with you!
Location! Location! Location!
Located on the historic “Millionaire’s Row” on West Street in Bar Harbor, the Saltair Inn sits on one acre of waterfront property – in fact, we are the ONLY waterfront bed and breakfast in downtown, Bar Harbor. Just two blocks from the Town Pier, we are just a short walk from restaurants, shopping, bike rentals, boat excursions, and the Bar Harbor Shore Path. At the base of the lawn, a few short steps takes you down to the beach where you can search for sea glass or walk over to the sandbar that connects Bar Harbor to Bar Island for a short hike. Our location on the edge of downtown also allows for easy access into Acadia National Park either by foot, bike or car. Parking is a premium in Bar Harbor but here you don’t have to worry. Park your car off-street in our lot and you never have to move it again. Bike to the carriage roads, walk to dining and excursions, or hop on the Island Explorer to access hiking trails or Sand Beach. Our large lawn with ample seating for guests offers up a quiet oasis in the midst of this bustling tourist town.

Experienced innkeepers and Concierges
Matt and I have spent the past 20 years operating this bed and breakfast. As one of the few remaining owner operated bed and breakfasts, we have hosted guests from every state in the U.S. as well as over 20 different countries. We have welcomed people of all nationalities, races, genders, ages, and religions. We have been privileged to celebrate new relationships, surprise engagements, honeymoons, elopements, babymoons and anniversaries. We have learned so much about the world and the people in it from our guests. Even after 20 years, we are still looking for ways to make our guest’s experiences a little more seamless, relaxing and delightful. We love to talk with our guests over breakfast and help them plan their day in Acadia whether what they’re looking for is an easy stroll or a challenging hike. Matt and I have hiked every trail and biked every carriage road in Acadia. We are familiar with the downtown shops and restaurants and love to tell you where to find a great lobster roll or an ice cream cone! We pride ourselves in being knowledgeable of all things Bar Harbor and Acadia. We also know to listen to our guests and hear about their experiences. We won’t recommend any business that doesn’t consistently provide excellent service to our customers.
Delicious gourmet breakfasts
There’s nothing better than starting your day with a fresh brewed (and roasted from local Crooked Porch Coffee!) coffee and a delicious breakfast cooked for you by someone else! We serve a wonderful two course breakfast every morning either on our rear deck overlooking Frenchman Bay or in our cozy sunroom. Our first course is often seasonal fruit, a healthy smoothie, or warmed fruit dish like baked pears with ginger crumb topping or broiled grapefruit. We alternate our breakfast of the day from sweet to savory and try to never serve any guest the same breakfast twice. Our guest’s favorites include Blueberry Stuffed French Toast, Eggs Benedict or Eggs Roulade. We are always able to accommodate special diets such as gluten or dairy free or vegan. We also know that everyone doesn’t always want a large breakfast so we’re happy to substitute something simpler such as scrambled eggs, yogurt or oatmeal. Breakfast is also where we get a chance to get to know our guests and help them plan their day but we also have enough experience to know when our guests just want to spend some time with each other and we can give them that space.

Luxurious guest rooms and common spaces
We have spent the majority of the past 19 Winters renovating and updating this 138 year old house. It’s been a labor of love and a lot of blood, sweat and tears! Each of our eight rooms are unique with different special features. Some have one or two gas fireplaces, air jet tubs, large walk in showers, heated floors or outside balconies. All feature either queen or king sized beds with their own private baths. We love getting feedback from our guests and trying to incorporate those ideas into our guest rooms. We also try to be ecologically minded such as eliminating single use plastic amenities and recycling. We respect our guest’s privacy as well and offer housekeeping as needed (which can be every day or never).

Our common areas are also inspired by our guests. Located on the first floor, the sunroom provides 24 hour beverage services such as Mount Desert Spring Water, Keurig, hot tea and chocolate, sodas and an ice maker. We offer our guests complimentary water bottles for use in Acadia and supply wine and water glasses for use here at the inn. Our third floor coffee lounge also provides a guest refrigerator, Keurig and Ice Maker to save those folks a trip down the two flights of stairs!
Guest experience
Here are just a few of the kind words our guests have shared with us…
“Thank you for your warmth and hospitality! We had a wonderful visit and enjoyed all of your recommendations for tooling around, hiking, eating and sight seeing as much as we did hanging around relaxing and enjoying the delicious breakfasts and munchies. You guys made this place lovely! All the best.” Robin and Sheldon, Mass
“We were looking for a very special place for our 60th birthdays and anniversary celebration, and we found it!! Your inn and your hospitality is amazing…breakfasts are delicious, every bit of advice given for activities was spot on…this location is absolutely perfect! Thank you for providing a beatuiful memory. And Matt, your blueberry pancakes rock…Thank you!!” Tim and Beth, Noblesville, IN
Unfortunately, we must leave today. This was our first trip to the Northeast U.S. Maine had always been on my bucket list. I was not disappointed.
